Madras High Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on Minister SP Velumani for wasting court's time.
Chennai: Madras High Court on 26 March, today, dismissed a plea moved by Minister SP Velumani who sought contempt of court action against Arappor Iyakkam, an NGO. The court has also imposed a fine and gave him a warning.
DMK's RS Bharathi and Jayaram Venkatesan from the NGO Arappor Iyakkam filed a case against AIADMK Minister SP Velumani citing his links with corrupt activities in tenders of Chennai and Coimbatore Corporation. The members also requested a special investigation team to look into this allegation.
S P Velumani alleged that the reports which went viral on social media accusing him of corruption were false and said that the NGO was violating the court's order by repeatedly posting such reports on social media pages.
The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy heard the case. On behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, a petition was made to dismiss the case as there was no conclusive evidence to link Minister SP Velumani with the alleged corruption in the primary investigation.
Later, the Judges said that it will not be possible to investigate this case during the elections and postponed the case to a date after June.
Meanwhile, Minister SP Velumani made an appeal to the court stating that the Arappor Iyakkam NGO was violating the court order by continuously talking about the case online and accused them of spreading false information across social media. This case was then presented before the bench of Chief Justice of Madras High Court.
The Judges have declared that this case was filed by SP Velumani on Arappor Iyakkam with an election-based motive and dismissed his plea. They stated that this case was a waste of the HC's time and said, "There was no embargo or a gag order against anyone to talk about the complaints or for broadcasting it."
The Madras HC Judges then imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on SP Velumani. They have also dismissed the case after a request was made by the chief counsel of Minister SP Velumani.
Minister SP Velumani is the AIADMK candidate contesting from Thondamuthur Constituency in the upcoming 2021 TN elections.
