SKASC conducts virtual workshop on 'Significance of Snakebites in Multidisciplinary Education'

Coimbatore: The Postgraduate Department of Social Work of Sri Krishna Arts and Science College (SKASC) Coimbatore, in collaboration with the University of Reading, UK organised an international virtual workshop on Wednesday, on 'The Significance of Snakebites in Multidisciplinary Education.'

Sources within the department say that the purpose of the workshop was to include the concept of Snakebite Education and Management in various fields of the curriculum. Dr. P Baby Shakila, Principal of SKASC inaugurated the workshop.

Addressing other experts who participated in the workshop, Dr. Sakthivel Vaiyapuri, Associate Professor in Cardiovascular & Venom Pharmacology at University of Reading, UK explained that snakes played an important role in biodiversity while balancing eco-systems, naturally.



“It is the need of the hour to protect snakes. There are over 300 species of snakes and among them about 60 species are venomous. To clear the myths surrounding snakes, it is the need of the hour to create awareness about them," added the doctor while commenting on the need for the virtual workshop. He also pointed out that about 5 million snake bites and 1,00,000 deaths are reported every year.

"Snakebites often happen accidentally and most of the victims are invariably poor agricultural and field workers. On an average, 50 snakebites per minute and one death every five minutes occurs globally. This has made the WHO consider snakebite as a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD)," he added.

Besides other dignitaries, Dr. Stephen Paul Samuel, Registrar, Acute Medicine and NHS Kings Lynn, UK elaborated on the current scenario of 'Snakebites Education and its Impact on Snakebite Management' through the webinar. Dr. A Sundhararajan addressed the topic of 'Social Dimension of Snakebites.'

Dr. K Latha, Principal In-charge of Government Law College, Tirunelveli was one of the keynote speakers who spoke on 'Legal support for Snakebite Victims.'

Dr. P Thirumalai Kolundu Subramanian who was also one of the keynote speakers highlighted the challenges in treating snakebite victims, while Dr. A Alagarsamy addressed social support for snakebite victims.
