Coimbatore: Kovai Thangam and more than 500 of his supporters joined DMK in the presence of DMK leader MK Stalin. Thangam, a resident of Coimbatore, left the Congress when Moopanar left Congress and began Tamil Maanila Congress and worked with him when the Tamil Maanila Congress was formed. He has been heading TMC in Coimbatore district and was also the former Vice President of the Tamil Maanila Congress party.

Kovai Thangam who was a two time MLA from Valparai constituency and who has considerable goodwill in the constituency was denied seat in Valparai for this 2021 TN assembly election.

The Valparai constituency was allotted to AIADMK’s Amul Kandhasamy. Dejected by this, Kovai Thangam felt his leader didn’t push for his candidacy much and announced his sudden withdrawal from the party. He then decided to contest as an independent candidate in Valparai constituency. Following advise from DMK leader MK Stalin, he then withdrew from contesting as a candidate and said he would campaign against the AIADMK and Minister SP Velumani and assured that MK Stalin would become the Chief Minister.

Kovai Thangam met DMK leader MK Stalin, who was staying at a star Hotel after completing his campaign in Salem yesterday, and joined along with more than 500 of his volunteers at the DMK.

Kovai Thangam said, "I will continue to turn the Kongu Zone into a DMK stronghold in the 2021 elections. I would continue to campaign in support of the DMK and win all 10 constituencies."
