Velandipalayam sticker issue: DMK condemns rumor that election officer has been attacked

Coimbatore: In connection with the posting of "stickers" on houses in the Velandipalayam area in Coimbatore yesterday, the Returning Officer removed the stickers allegedly after public complaint.

This resulted in a quarrel with the election officer. Shortly after this incident news started spreading with the video of a quarrel between DMK members and election officers but the news audio has been spread as though DMK members have hit the officer.

Coimbatore North DMK executives have strongly condemned this, saying it is a deliberate lie and fake news being spread. They said that proper permission had been obtained to affix the sticker and that no one had spoken or assaulted the officer.

DMK Velandipalayam Ward Secretary Ravi told us that the video message posted on social media was complete.“I am the Ward Secretary of Coimbatore Velandipalayam DMK. The day before yesterday evening, with the permission of every woman in the house, we were sticking stickers on the door of the house saying "Stalin is coming, dawn is coming". Then, an AIADMK supporter came to the house where we were staying and asked his wife who had posted it and immediately informed the election official by phone.

Following this, the Area Electoral Officer Abdul Farooq and his team came directly and started tearing the stickers we had pasted without warning. Then, we all got together and told him, it is customary in homes to stick stickers during election times. We went to the house where the sticker was affixed and asked the women, "We have permission and we are affixing the sticker." The woman told us that it was okay to put up a sticker. After that, the officer told if you need to affix stickers, get permission to paste the sticker properly. We told we have got the permission and we did not force anyone to paste and we took the permission formally. The election official then left.

News of the incident has been circulating on social media, as though DMK has attacked an election official. This is completely fake news. We fully respect the rules of electoral conduct. The DMK won’t engage in any kind of anarchy. It is our custom to obey the leader’s word and approach problems legally.
