Electrical engineer and inspector arrested for taking bribe to provide electrical connection in Coimbatore


Coimbatore: Two persons, including an electrical engineer and an electrical inspector, were arrested near Annur for accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 to provide an agricultural electrical connection. Kanagaraj, 42, is a farmer from Kuppan village next to Annur in Coimbatore district. He runs a fabrication factory and had applied for the Tatkal scheme by remitting 3 lakhs to get agricultural electricity connection and obtained an order for this. Following this, Kanagaraj approached Rajendran 57, (Additional Officer) of Karamadai EB Colony, Junior Engineer, in the office of the Assistant Electrical Engineer at Vadakalur, for electricity connection. Rajendran asked Kanagaraj for a bribe of 15 thousand rupees to provide the electricity connection following which Kanagaraj lodged a complaint with the Coimbatore Anti-Corruption Police.

The police asked Kanagaraj to hand over the Rs.15,000 notes smeared with the chemical to Rajendran. Kanagaraj went to the office yesterday and contacted Rajendran on his cell phone to hand over the bribe money. Inspector working in the same office as per Rajendran's instructions told him to give the money to Ilango. Anti-corruption police, who were hiding there when Ilango received the money, entered the inspector's room and arrested the electrical inspector Ilango. Assistant Electrical Engineer Rajendran was called to the office and was arrested. They also checked the receipt for the amount that was there in the electricity office. Police said that a search would be carried out at his house and a report would be sent to the higher authorities.
