Labour Report: Indians reported to work longest and earned the least

Men reportedly work longer hours than women in both rural and urban areas across India.

Delhi: While India is still waiting to update new labour codes, the working hours in a country is among the longest in the world.

Covid-19 created an impact on all types of labour. While white collar jobs find the transition from the regular office to full time work from home easy, the other sectors of manual labour do not get that luxury.

Many in India are excited about the new labour codes which propes 4 day work week, this new reform will be a potential threat to various other sectors across India.

Recents reports say that Indians are among the most overworking people internationally with a minimum of 48 hour work shift.

The International Labour Organization has ranked India fifth among all countries with mean working hours. India is accompanied by other countries like Qatar, Gambia and Maldives where the majority of the working population are Indians.

ILO also states that, despite the long working hours, Indian workers are the least in making money for the quantity of work they do. India's minimum wages are reported to be among the lowest in the world.

There can be wage differences across countries but it is still evident that India is a country where over workers are paid less.
