Bird migration delayed by a month in The Nilgiris due unpredictable climatic conditions

Birds migrate from hilltops to plains this season and also migrate from one mountain to another during this time of the year.


The Nilgiris: The Nilgiris district in Tamilnadu is well known for its wide eco system. Since 55% of the district is surrounded by dense forests, birds from different countries migrate during this season.

But this year due to altercations in weather and unpredictable climate changes, the bird migration was delayed by a month and has started only now.

Birds migrate from hilltops to plains this season and also migrate from one mountain to another during this time of the year.

The Bird migration has been delayed this year due to the unprecedented heavy rains and frost this year. Domestic brids migrate from Ooty, Kodanadu, Coonnor, Burliyar and Kotagiri.



Birds like Kingfisher Nilgiris laughingthrush, Orange Black, Flycatcher, White Eye, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Black Drongo, Grey Wagtail, Seven Sisters and Oriental White Eye have now began their migration.



One can witness these bird migration from various areas in The Nilgiris, especially in Coonoor SIM's park, Kodanadu View point, Burliyar and Gudalur.

Birds were easily spotted due to the lack of tourists during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now since the tourists crowd are back in from, the birds have started their migration in their old paths.
