NTC to receive Rs 120 crores to upgrade all mills: Trade unions expect all 7 mills in TN start functioning from March

Out of the 7 mills that are functioning in Tamilnadu 5 are located in Coimbatore namely Murugan Mills, Coimbatore Spinning and Weaving Mills, Pankaja Mills, Cambodia Mills, Sri Ranga Vilas Mills.

Coimbatore: With the initiative taken by the head office in forming a special committee to study and submit the situation of all NTC Mills across the nation, there is big hope among all the workers that soon the mills will be upgraded and start functioning effectively.

National Textile Corporation Limited, (NTC) is a schedule “A” public sector company under the ambit of the Ministry of Textile, Government of India, engaged in production of yarn and fabric through its 23 mills in operation.

Out of the 7 mills that are functioning in Tamilnadu, 5 are located in Coimbatore namely Murugan Mills, Coimbatore Spinning and Weaving Mills, Pankaja Mills, Cambodia Mills, Sri Ranga Vilas Mills. The 2 other mills are Kaleshwarar Mills in KalayarKovil (Sivagangai district) and Pioneer Spinners (Unit 1, 2) in Paramakudi (Ramanathapuram district).

There are more than 4,000 employees who are currently working in all the 7 mills that are functioning across Tamil nadu. Workers at these mills include permanent and daily wage categories.

Due to the Covid-19 virus outbreak, all the spinning mills including both the fully private and NTC mills were stopped. After the government gave relaxations for theindustrial sector to function again, all the spinning mills which are fully private party owned started to function. Whereas 7 NTC mills in Tamil nadu remain closed and recently three mills in Tamilnadu were reopened.

Trade unions continued to stress the head office to take steps ensuring the mills to function back again. In this situation the National Textile Corporation Head Office has formed a special committee to study the present situation in all the NTC mills across the nation and the steps that had to be taken for running them effectively.

This has given a big hope among the workers that soon the NTC mills will be reopened.

HMS union, Tamil Nadu, Secretary, T.S.Rajamani said, “All the NTC Mills are capable of making huge profits. But the negligence in upgrading the machineries and developing good infrastructure facilities has affected the functioning of the mills. Post the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, in TamilNadu only 3 mills have been reopened at present. Recently NTC head office has now appointed Director (Finance) and Director (HR) Department and this committee would be inspecting and submitting a detailed report about what are the steps to be taken to run all the NTC Mills across the nation to effectively increase the profits. During the last week office bearers of unions interacted with this committee officials during which we stressed the immediate need of upgrading the machineries and improving the infrastructure facilities and also ensuring workers Welfare amenities are provided.

In reply, the committee officials said that Rs 120 crores would be soon sent to the head office towards the sale of NTC property in Mumbai to the Railway Department. Once that amount is received, all the upgradation activities would be taken care off. This information has given big hope for us."

"Previously on behalf of all Trade Unions we met the Central Textile Minister and the NTC Head Officials and submitted representations in which we have clearly mentioned about the present situation and the steps to be taken in the NTC Mills. Now we are happy that a special committee has been formed to upgrade the NTC mills. Work will resume probably from March at all the NTC mills in TamilNadu."
