Government holidays, government offices and banks are closed due to the Thai poosam festival.
Coimbatore: Government offices and banks remained closed due to the Thai poosam festival government holiday recently announced by CM Edappadi Palaniswamy. In a statement issued by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu few weeks ago, he announced that the Thaipoosam being one of the most important of the festivals celebrated in Tamil Nadu of the Tamil God, Lord Murugan, it will be a state holiday from this year onwards.
Government offices, banks and corporation zonal offices, taluk offices, etc. in Coimbatore are not functioning today as it is a Thai poosam festival. Only a few officers came there and worked at their own will. All areas were deserted as government employees did not turn up for work. As ration shops sell essential items, they usually run on public holidays as well. But today a holiday has been declared even for ration shops on the occasion of Thaipoosam. Ration shops usually operate on some public holidays. and hence the ration staff demanded that a holiday be declared for Thai poosam. Accepting it, the government announced a holiday today for ration shops too.
The government has given permission to the employees of the State Transport Corporation who are on duty today and the employees who are on weekend leave to take alternative leave on any other day. Special poojas and yagas have been held at the Marudhamalai Murugan Temple in Coimbatore since this morning to mark the Thai poosam festival.
