Adyar Cancer Institute’s doyen Dr V Shanta passes away
Coimbatore: Dr V. Shanta, one of the early patrons in the field of oncology in India, a doyen of cancer care in India, senior oncologist and chairperson of the Adyar Cancer Institute died early on Tuesday morning. She was 93 years old.
Dr. Shanta was taken to the hospital as she complained of chest pain last night at about 9 p.m. It was said that she had a big block that could not be removed, and she passed away at 3.55 a.m today.
Her mortal remains been moved to the old Cancer Institute premises, which she passionately helped build along with her mentor Dr. Krishnamoorthy.
Dr. Shanta was extremely passionate about cancer care and when she was here in Coimbatore last year and addressed an august gathering of doctors and rotarians at the PSG Hospital. During her interaction here, she took us through the early years of her service in the Cancer Institute and the challenges to look forward to. She has been very active until her hospitalisation even though she had been feeling under the weather for a couple of days, sources close to her revealed.
