Better turnout for COVID-19 vaccination in Coimbatore, on Monday

Covid-19 vaccine sites in Coimbatore and its neighbouring places on Monday witnessed a slight increase in turnout, contrary to the overall reports suggesting low turnout of vaccination numbers in the state.

Covid-19 vaccine sites in Coimbatore and its neighbouring places on Monday witnessed a slight increase in turnout, contrary to the overall reports suggesting low turnout of vaccination numbers in the state.

As many as 253 beneficiaries were administered Covid-19 vaccine shots at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday, while only 109 were reported to have taken the vaccine shot on January 17, Sunday.

According to reports 117 people at Pollachi Government hospital, 53 at Nallatipalayam PHC and 54 beneficiaries at Mettupalayam GH have taken Covid-19 vaccination shots, so far.

However, in Salem only six people took the vaccines, according to a source from public health department.

Positively, no single report on Adverse events following immunization ( AEFI) was reported in Coimbatore, according to the data by Deputy Director of Health, Coimbatore.

Doctors at CMCH attributed the low turnout due to the absence of healthcare workers and employees over pongal holidays. They will get vaccinated once the report to the duty, said the doctors.

Rumours and fear of side-effects amid people is one of the prime reasons for low turn out, said another doctor upon anonymity.

A day ago, Health Secretary Radhakrishnan clarified that the aim of the government is to provide vaccinnation to all and added that its not about how many people we inoculate each day. "We wanted to vaccinate everybody and the drive is based on demands and not on targets", he told.

Even though the state has the capacity to vaccinate 16,600 people a day, only 16.8% healthcare workers took the vaccine on Saturday, the day the drive was officially launched.

Coimbatore alone has 40,600 vaccines in stock stored in 105 cold chain facilities across the district.
