Review panel recommends age for marriage for women as 21 years

Coimbatore: Review panel has recommended the age for marriage for women as 21 years. A study by Central government has recommended raising the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21. In 1930 Child Marriage Prevention Act was passed and the Sharada Act raised the age of marriage to 14 for women and 16 for men. The law was later amended to raise the age of marriage for women to 18 and for men to 21.

Speaking on the occasion of Independence Day last year, Prime Minister Modi said a committee has been set up to look into raising the age of marriage for young women to prevent them from suffering from malnutrition. The panel was led by former Party leader Jaya Jaitley, and Nidhi Aayog member VK Paul, and 10 other experts who examined raising the age of marriage for women.

The panel then submitted its report to the Prime Minister's Office and the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development. The report suggested that the age of marriage for women could be raised from 18 to 21 saying that when the law of raising the age of marriage for women comes into force, the number of deaths of pregnant women due to malnutrition will be reduced. It alsosuggested that a large number of women attend colleges and skill development training centers and it can help women gain financial independence
