Airtel, Jio and BSNL landline users must prefix 0 while calling mobile numbers from today

Airtel, Jio and BSNL landline users must prefix 0 while calling mobile numbers from today. All the service providers have informed their customers that they would need to prefix zero while mobile numbers from landlines from January 15th. Airtel and Jio have been sending messages to fixed line users urging them to ensure that they prefix 0 when dialling any mobile number from a fixed line number. BSNL chairman and managing director P K Purwar told PTI that the necessary communication for user awareness would have been initiated, for implementing the directive.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) in a release in November said that callers will have to dial numbers with prefix '0' for making calls from landline to mobile phone, from 15 January. It also informed that there will be no change while dialling numbers for fixed-to fixed, mobile-to-fixed, and mobile-to-mobile calls. All fixed line subscribers will be provided with ‘0’ dialling facility.

The communications ministry said that this would free up sufficient numbering resources for future use. As a result of this about 2,539 million numbering series are expected to be generated. By freeing up numbering resources it is expected to mete out more number of connections in future for the benefit of mobile customers. The ministry said this implementation would be done in minimum inconvenience to the subscribers to free up essential numbering resources.
