Coimbatore - Sathy road widening work: Farmers protest against land acquisition by private companies

Coimbatore: Farmers and volunteers protest against land acquisition by private companies for Coimbatore - Sathy road widening work in front of the District Collectorate.

In a petition submitted to the Collector Rajamani by the farmers led by the District President of the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association, S. Palanisamy, it was stated that the NH 209 road from Coimbatore to Sathy is 456 km long and this road was the main road from Coimbatore to Sathyamangalam and Karnataka via Annur.

The road from Coimbatore to Sathy is to be widened and it has been reported that a report has been prepared and sent to the National Highways Department through a private entity. Thus, a new road of 98 km is to be constructed near Annur in the villages of Kurumbapalayam, Puliyampatti, Sathy and Bannari through the suburbs. Thus several hundred acres of agricultural lands are to be affected. Meanwhile, private sector employees are installing stones to acquire land to build a 60-kilometer bypass. The petition stated that the land should be acquired only by the State Government to implement this scheme and should not be implemented by a private company.

Police negotiated with more than 20 farmers involved in darna promising action following which they dispersed.
