Coimbatore: As part of the 13th edition of the Coimbatore Vizha celebrations, book titled "Birds of Coimbatore-2nd Edition" was launched at an event held in PSG Tech, on Friday. The book is brought out by CII-Young Indians Coimbatore Chapter and Coimbatore Nature Society.

The event was presided by Dr B K Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman, Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Dr Pramod, Principal Scientist, SACON, Venkatesh District Forest Officer, Bhoominathan Landscape coordinator, WWF and Kalidasan, President, NGO OSAI.

The 2nd edition of Birds of Coimbatore documents about 409 species of birds recorded in Coimbatore district. This is an increase of over 92 species which were recorded in the first edition of the book which was released in January 2019.

Notably, the book also features close to 40 bird watching hotspots with GPS coordinates located around the district which would be useful for both beginners and experienced birdwatchers.

All the birds featured in the book have accompanying photographs and additional information such as their respective common name, regional name, scientific name, conservation status, local status, size, description, diet, behaviour, distribution and nesting information.

The book is separated by orders, so that it is easier for birdwatchers to locate the bird in the book. Another interesting highlight of the book is its use of habitat icons and QR codes. Scanning the QR code in your smart phone will take you to a webpage containing bird calls.

The book also features a very enticing introduction to Coimbatore penned by eminent speaker and educationist Dr B K Krishnaraj Vanavarayar which covers the history of Coimbatore district from prehistoric times to the present day.

The book is 320 pages, hardbound, full colour and has been produced with high quality paper and it is priced at Rs 1,000/-. The Book has been jointly authored by Pavendhan A, Balaji P B and Prakash G.
