Coimbatore: Heavy rains in Coimbatore: No such rainfall recorded in January so far. Heavy rains lashed various parts of Coimbatore from last night till this morning. As a result, people suffered greatly due to the accumulation of rainwater in roads and under flyovers.

This is the first time that the Coimbatore airport has received 113 mm of rain in a single day, the highest in January. In Coimbatore, it started drizzling around 6 pm yesterday and soon started raining heavily. Heavy rains lashed Ukkadam, RS Puram, Kavundampalayam, Ramanathapuram, Peelamedu and Selvapuram.

Rainwater stagnated in areas including the Coimbatore Railway Road, Lanka Corner, under Avinashi Road flyover, Racecourse, Coimbatore-Trichy Road, the railway bridge on the road from NTC Mill Road to Brookebond resulting in severe inconvenience for two-wheelers

Medical staff and patients suffered as water stagnated at the Coimbatore Government Hospital premises. The road between Coimbatore and Trichy has become muddy due to heavy rains yesterday. On the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam road, the roads were completely damaged due to the work on the Kavundampalayam flyover.

A tree was uprooted in Race Course, Coimbatore and the vehicles were diverted. Due to the continuous rains in Coimbatore, the water supply to the water bodies in Coimbatore has increased and a cold weather prevails in the district.

An old house in Rajiv Nagar was crashed in Ammankulam, Puliyakulam, Coimbatore. No one was harmed as inmates frightened by the heavy rains left the house early and stayed at their relative’s house.

Similarly, rainwater seeped into shops in the Lakshmi Mill signal area and the public suffered due to the rainwater getting into their houses in the water tank area. There was heavy traffic as rainwater stagnated up to 3 feet in Sungam, Coimbatore. Corporation employees are actively involved in the task of draining rainwater from areas where there is stagnation.
