1 out of 5 NTC mills at Coimbatore start functioning: 3 out of 7 NTC mills across Tamil Nadu resume operations

Coimbatore: After thepandemic outbreak Sri Ranga Vilas Millwhich is one among the 5 NTC mills functioning in the city has started functioning. National Textile Corporation Limited, (NTC) is a schedule “A” public sector company under the ambit of the Ministry of Textile, Government of India, engaged in production of yarn and fabric through its 23 mills in operation.

Out of the total, 7 mills are functioning in Tamil nadu. Among them 5 mills are located at Coimbatore namely, Murugan mills, Coimbatore spinning and weaving mills, Pankaja mills, Cambodia mills, Sri Ranga vilas mills. Other Two Mills namely Kaleshwarar mills at Kalayarkovil (Sivagangai district) Pioneer spinners (Unit 1,2) at Paramakudi (Ramanathapuram district).

There are more than 4,000 employees who are currently working in all the 7 mills functioning in Tamil nadu which includes permanent, daily wage category etc., Due to 'Covid 19' virus outbreak, all the spinning mills which include both fully private and NTC mills were stopped. After the government gave relaxations for the industry sector to function, all the spinning mills which are fully private party owned started to function. Whereas 7 NTC mills in Tamil nadu continue to remain closed.

This has made workers upset. Trade unions have stressed the NTC head office to take needy actions ensuring all the NTC mills to start functioning. Recently the NTC head office has decided to reopen 3 mills in Tamil Nadu. Following this all these three mills have started functioning.

HMS union, state secretary, T S Rajamani said, "The initiative taken by the NTC head office has given some relief and hope among the workers. Trade unions have stressed the NTC management to take action in reopening all 7 Mills in Tamil Nadu. Presently Sri Ranga Vilas Mills has started functioning in Coimbatore. Kaleshwarar mill and Pioneer Mills also have resumed operations. At present the market is good and stating this we have stressed the NTC head office to soon reopen all the NTC mills. Meanwhile, as we have already decided, office bearers of all trade unions would go to Delhi and meet ministers and NTC officials at the head office to get solutions for various requests which have been kept pending for a very long time."
