Coimbatore: Following avian flu outbreak in two districts in Kerala, vehicles carrying poultry from Kerala has been restricted into entering Coimbatore and Tirupur districts,

While Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh confirmed the death of hundreds of birds due to the avian flu, few days ago, health officials in Kerala have found ducks to have infected with Avian Flu in two districts. The Kerala state has issued high alert to take all precautionary measures including culling of birds in the vicinity of the infected places.

Minister for Forest Wildlife and Animal Husbandry K Raju of Kerala announced that nearly 12,000 ducks were culled fearing avian flu in Kottayam and Alappuzha. He added that all vehicles carrying poultry are being checked and sanitised.

Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, all vehicles carrying poultry are denied entry into Coimbatore and Tirupur districts, said Dr. R. Perumal Swamy, Regional Joint Director of Animal Husbandry.

He added that, "People need not panic, as all safety and disease control protocols are in place. All vehicles from Kerala to Tamil Nadu will be allowed only after producing due certificates and sanitising. However, vehicles carrying poultry from Kerala will strictly not be allowed."

Subramanian, President of Tamil Nadu Egg Marketing Society opined that the Avian Flu in Kerala will have nil or minimal impact on poultry in Tamil Nadu. Yet, the business might take a hit due tomyths and fear mongering among public, he said.

Mr Subramaniam was certain that bird flu will not spread from Kerala to poultry farms in Tamil Nadu.
