In a protest against the privatization of the Nilgiri Mountain Rail, members of the Viduthalai Siruthaigal party members party were arrested as they tried to participate in a siege protest of the Nilgiri Mountain train today in Coonoor.

Coimbatore: The Nilgiri Mountain Rail Service which runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty runs around the Nilgiri Hills which is a major tourist attraction in India.

The train service which is continuing to chime around even after 100 years of the inaugural run, the NilgirisMountain Rail has been also recognised as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO Organization.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many tourists attraction have been shut down across the country and the Mountain Rail Service was also stopped during that period for about 8 months.

With the Nilgiris now rebooting to it's full form preparing for the summer of 2021 no news about the reopening of the Nilgiri Mountain Rail has been announced by the Southern Railways yet regarding the train service being open for the public.

With this at stake the Southern Railways have now signed with a private travel concern who are operating the Nilgiri Mountain Rail in the name of TN 43.

After the trial run which happened on the 5th and 6th of December, the new TN 43 mountain train service has been scheduled for operation on Saturdays and Sundays for tourists at a cost of INR 3,000 per individual.

The initial cost charged by the railways department was from INR 100 - 500, the local public as well as the tourists visiting Nilgiris are now displeased with the private concern charging many times higher than the usual price.

Also at the trial run of the Nilgiri Mountain Rail Service, the train's official emblem was hidden with the new TN 43 name board.

The train service which was in operation today was under siege by the Viduthalai Siruthaigal party members when the train reached Coonoor Railway Station.

The party members who protested against the government handing over the heritage of Mountain Rail Service to a private organisation and agreeing it to be run at a drastic change in fare were arrested by the police department.

Public and tourists also participated along with the Viduthalai Siruthaigal party members in the protest requesting the government to take immediate charge over the Mountain Rail Service.
