Coimbatore: Public demand to remove shops in Maruthamalai stairways that violates rules.
The tribal people have complained that there are shops on the steps leading to the Marudhamalai Subramaniam Swamy Temple in violation of the rules. Devotees go up the stairs from the foothills to reach the top of the hill Marudhamalai SubramaniaSwamy Temple. There are about 63 tribal families living near the temple.
The government gave permission to set up shops on the stairs to help them make a living. No one other than the tribals are allowed to set-up a shop in the stairways. It is alleged that now there are also others who have set-up shops in the stairs causing an increase in traffic jams. The use of plastic has also increased which endangers the lives of wildlife. So the tribal people have demanded that immediate action be taken to remove these shops.
