2 tons of tobacco products smuggled in vehicles seized at midnight: 6 people arrested.

Coimbatore: Police seized 2 tonnes of tobacco products smuggled in vehicles near Coimbatore and arrested six people in connection with this. Saravanampatti police were engaged in an intensive vehicle inspection last night at Vilankurichi Road, Gandhi Nagar near Coimbatore.

Saravanampatti police were engaged in an intensive vehicle inspection last night at Vilankurichi Road, Gandhi Nagar near Coimbatore. A cargo van and 3 motorcycles which were passing through caused suspicion and were stopped and interrogated.

Due to the contradictory statement by the six, they were taken to the police station for questioning. They were identified as Alex Pandian (37) of Umarikadu Nadesan Kovil street, Thoothukudi District, Manikandan (27) of Anjugam Nagar, Udayampalayam, Coimbatore, Karthik (23) of Periyapalayathamman Kovil Street, Villupuram District, Ananthanarayanan (51) of Ganapathy Lakshmipuram and Manikandan (22) from VM Chatram and Murugan (32) from Muthu Mariamman Kovil Road, Thoothukudi. They were found to be smuggling tobacco products banned by the Tamil Nadu government.

The police confiscated 2 tonnes of tobacco products kept in 30bundles worth Rs 10 lakh 24 thousand. The police arrested them and are continuing to investigate where they smuggled the tobacco products from.
