Tapioca is cultivated in about a thousand acres in various areas including Vadugapalayam, Nalli Kavundampalayam and Kinathukkadavu near Pollachi. Currently, hundreds of workers are involved in tapioca harvesting and the work is in full swing.

Pollachi tapioca is well received in neighbouring cities and states including Mumbai and Kerala and is being bought in large quantities by traders.

Speaking to the farmers about the yield and productivity they said, “10-month-old tapioca is a profitable crop. In major states of Maharashtra and Kerala, tapioca is mostly used as staple food. In particular, traders in the Salem district are increasingly buying tapioca for creating ‘javvarisi’.

In addition, we have spent up to 20 thousand rupees to cultivate. Last year it was sold for 14 thousand rupees a ton. They said they were not getting the right profit as it was selling for only Rs 8,000 a tonne this year.

But farmers are concerned that intermediaries are making more profit as traders who buy from farmers at lower prices are selling tapioca to consumers at higher prices in the open market.

Therefore, if the government buys tapioca directly, farmers and general public will get nutritious tapioca at low prices.”
