NEET: Can't afford to join management quota, Pollachi govt school student seeks financial assistance from govt


Coimbatore: Yuvanraj (18) a student of Vanavarayar Government High School in Samathur has sought financial assistance from the State government to pursue his medical dream. He has secured 450th rank in the 7.5% quota by the State government to enable government students join medicine.

Yuvanraj has secured 445 marks out of 600 in the public examination; 155 marks in the NEET examination and ranked 450th in the 7.5 per cent quota for government school students in the state. This is his second attempt in NEET.

As the quota seats at Government Medical Colleges are already full, he reportedly has been allotted management quota seat at Mookambika Medical College in Kanyakumari and Indira Medical College at Thiruvalluvar.

According to the selection committee, medical studies will cost more than Rs 4 lakh per annum. Unable to meet the financial commitment, Yuvan had returned to his hometown and is presently working at catering units to support his family which is reeling in poverty.

Yuvanraj along with his parents and mother are residing at Mahatma Gandhi Nagar inSuleswaranpatti.Seven months ago, Murugan, father of Yuvanraj who was the bread winner of the family passed away, due to illness. Since then the family has been struggling economically to meet their needs.

"My father died during my board exams.So my brother, who had completed his diploma works in a hosiery unit to support the family", told the 18-year-old.

He added that, "As seats in the 7.5 percent quota for government school students ran out, I was placed in the private administrative quota. I returned home unable to join college, as it costs more than Rs 4 lakh, a year."

"I am currently working at catering units to take care of my family's financial needs. Considering the poor economic situation of my family, the state government should provide assistance to pursue my medical dream", Yuvan pleaded.
