One Nation One Ration Card Scheme: Process of fingerprint registration resumes in Coimbatore


Coimbatore: Process of fingerprint registration resumes in Coimbatore for the 'One Nation One Ration Card Scheme'. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K Palanisamy introduced the scheme in the state in 32 districts with effect from October 2, 2020.

This scheme enables people traveling from state to state and district to district to buy goods at any ration shop. To enable this, a fingerprint registration machine called Biometric system is being installed in all ration shops in Tamil Nadu, as an alternative to the Point of Sale machine.

Meanwhile, the project was suspended due to a technical glitch in the fingerprint registration process. Following this, technical glitches have been rectified and work is underway to re-activate the project.

According to a district government official, there are more than 1,400 PDS shops in Coimbatore district. Currently, the fingerprint is being obtained through a bio-metric machine on an trial basis at one shop in each taluk. Based on the trial results we will be able to ascertain thetime and analyse, future technical glitches.

He added that the report on this study will be submitted to the Government of Tamil Nadu.Soon after, which all shops will get their fingerprints through the bio-metric machine and the project will be implemented, seamlessly across the district.
