Coimbatore: Officials said that groundwater level has risen in Coimbatore district due to north-east monsoon.

There are 133 open wells and 32 deep wells under the control of Public Works Department (Water Resources) in 12 districts including Kinathukadavu, Pollachi, Anaimalai, Thondamuthur and Sulur in Coimbatore district. This is measured to determine the groundwater level and it is reported every month. The southwest monsoon in Coimbatore this year was heavier than expected. As a result, the ground water level in the district has risen significantly.

Groundwater levels have risen in all the nine circles except Kinathukadavu, Pollachi North and South last October. The maximum is 2.18 meters in the Sultanpettai. The groundwater level has risen by 2 meters in Madukkarai and 1.78 meters in Thondamuthur. This is 0.10 to 2.8 meters higher than last year. Electronic instruments are provided to measure the ground water level.

Currently the water level in the wells is measured by tape. The wells are equipped with an electronic device that measures the water level in 10 percent of the wells. This allows the groundwater level to be accurately and easily calculated. In the future, all wells will be equipped with an electronic device that measures water levels, officials said.
