Ponds in Coimbatore filling up: Noyyal River receives 280 cubic feet of water per second.

Coimbatore: With the north east monsoons intensifying, over 10 ponds in Coimbatore are filling up fast and as a result the Noyyal River is receiving 280 cubic feet of water per second.

With good rainfall in the Western Ghats and adjoining areas water supply in Noyyal river has increased. Currently, the Chithiraichavadi dam and the Kuniyamuthur check dam are overflowing. Public are gathering here to enjoy the view. As there were heavy rains water logging was seen under the railway bridge on the road from Avinashi Road to Kattoor in Coimbatore last night. Corporation employees removed it with a motor yesterday morning.



Due to the heavy rains of the last few days, various roads in the city are covered with mud. This has caused severe inconvenience to motorists. The Noyyal River flowing along the Perur Padithurai due to the monsoon was visited by a large number of people from the area. Due to the heavy rains in Coimbatore, the ponds including Ukkulam, Ukkadam Periyakulam and Kurichi Kulam are overflowing. Public Works Department officials said that the Noyyal River is currently receiving 280 cubic feet of water per second. Noyyal river water is diverted to ponds through canals.

Due to the monsoon, ten pounds in Coimbatore, Vedapatti Pudukulam, Konarampathy Pond, Nara Sampathikulam, Krishnampathy Pond, Selvambathikulam, Kumaraswamy Pond, Valankulam, Kurichi Pond and Ukkadam Periyakulam have overflowed. Apart from this, the pools including Ganga Narayana Samudra, Chottaiyandi Kuttai, Perur Periyakulam and Chengulam are 80% full. Currently, the water in the Noyyal River is open to these ponds. If the rains continue for a few more days, these ponds will overflow. The Noyyal River is currently flooded up to the Putuwiki Dam.
