The first case of someone in China suffering from COVID-19 can be traced back to November 17. A 55-year-old from Hubei province could have been the first person to have contracted the viral infection on November 17 last year and cases rapidly began piling up, since then.

Reports suggest that the earliest case was detected on 17 November - weeks before authorities announced the emergence of the new virus.

The Chinese government was widely criticised over attempts to cover up the outbreak in the early weeks, including alleged crackdowns on doctors who alerted about a new Sars-like virus emerging in the city of Wuhan in Hubei province of China.

The virus, which is now a global pandemic and had infected 88,74,290 people in India and killed 1,30,519 people, according to health ministry.  However, the recoveries continue to remain high,  as of today 82,90,370 patients infected with the novel Coronavirus has recovered.

"The data obtained by the Post, said a 55-year-old from Hubei province could have been the first person to contract Covid-19. For about one month after that date there were one to five new cases reported each day, the report said, and by 20 December there were 60 confirmed cases.", as quoted in The Guardian.
