The Nilgiris:The Nilgiris district is 65 percent densely wooded. It is home to rare species of animals, birds and reptiles, including elephants, tigers, bears, leopards and Indian gaurs. Many species of exotic birds also visit here. This being the case, a rare bird called 'Lazard cuckoo' has been seen in the village of Kolanimattam near Coonoor.

The bird is usually found in Pakistan, China, Japan, Vietnam, North Korea and South Korea. In particular, it is found in the Himalayan ranges of India, such as Jammu, Kashmir and Uttarakhand. Migrating and breeding during the winter, the Lazard cuckoo can only survive in climates at altitudes of about 1300 feet to 3600 feet above sea level. The Lazard Cuckoo in India travels to Sri Lanka and Africa during the winter to breed. This species lays its eggs in the nests of other birds.

In Tamil Nadu, these birds have been recorded in 9 places including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Kodiakkarai, Thiruvannamalai and Mettupalayam. However, in the Nilgiris district, it is recorded that the Lazarus Cuckoo was last seen in 1983. About 37 years later, it has been sighted in the Ketti valley. A farmer from the area saw birds chasing the Lazard cuckoo, rescued it and released it in a dense forest area. The sighting of a rare bird in the Nilgiris after 37 years has excited the bird enthusiasts.
