The Nilgiris: Nilgiris MP today petitioned the Managing Director of TANTEA to provide a 20% bonus to TANTEA workers.
The Nilgiris district has government tea estates in Coonoor, Kotagiri, Gudalur Pandiyaru, Nelliyalam, Serangode, Serampadi, Kolappalli and Naduvattam where more than 10,000 people are employed as permanent and temporary workers.
The TANTEA management announced a 10% bonus for the plantation workers for the Diwali festival, which was opposed by many, including the CITU, AITUC, LPF, and others. The unions have been making demands and workers have also been involved in various protests and demonstrations since the beginning of this month.
Under the circumstances, Nilgiris MP A. Raja met TANTEA Managing Director Srinivasa Reddy and petitioned him seeking a a 20% bonus to the workers. The petition also seeks payment of outstanding allowances, medical leave pay, etc. Nilgiris District DMK Secretary PM Mubarak, former minister Ilithurai Ramachandran, Gudalur MLA Dravida Mani and many others were present on the occasion.
