Coimbatore: As the Northeast monsoon has started gathering momentum, chlorination of drinking water in Coimbatore has been geared up.

According to the Meteorological Department, the northeast monsoon began across Tamil Nadu from the 28th of last month. The monsoon has started in many districts of Tamil Nadu and most parts of the state will receive heavy or moderate rains.

Meanwhile, Coimbatore has taken several precautionary measures during the monsoon season as there is a risk of infection and water logging. As part of this, chlorination of drinking water in the Corporation area has been intensified. The Corporation of Coimbatore receives and distributes drinking water daily to the people under schemes including Siruvani, Pillur 1, Pillur 2, Azhiyar Project, and Kavundampalayam-Vadavalli Project.

Through these projects, the drinking water obtained is brought to the drinking water tanks in the areas including Gandhi Park and Ramakrishnapuram through the main pipelines. The water is then brought from there to the overhead tanks in the wards through pipelines and distributed to the public.

Drinking water obtained from the Siruvani Dam and the Pillur Dam is brought to the treatment plants and gets chlorinated with chlorine in a gaseous form. Water in the main reservoirs and tanks in the wards also undergo the chlorine treatment. With the onset of the Northeast monsoon, chlorination of drinking water has been intensified to prevent the spread of diseases including dengue.

Corporation officials said, "There are more than fifty overhead drinking tanks in the corporation area. Chlorine is mixed in the water at a rate of 4 grams per 1000 liters."
