The Nilgiris: Man who was walking back to his home in a tea estate due to lack of bus facility near Gudalur was trampled to death by an elephant. The public are in panic as two people were killed within a week by elephants in the area.

Balusamy is a resident of Quint Private Estate, Oveli Municipality, near Gudalur in the Nilgiris District. He has been working in Gudalur municipality as a daily wage labourer. He used to come to Gudalur every day from his home, about 15 km away, and return home in the evening after work. Government buses plying in the area have been suspended for the past six months due to poor road conditions. Balasamy, who was returning home yesterday was trampled to death by a wild elephant last night.

People were searching for him all over the area as Balasamy did not come home for the night. Today, the public informed the forest department that they saw Balasamy's body lying on the roadside one kilometer away from his house. Forest department officials recovered his body and sent it to Gudalur Government Hospital for autopsy. A woman who ventured out to wash clothes two days ago was also killed by an elephant. Locals said that even after the elephant was chased away by forest officers from the area, it returned and killed Balasamy from the Quint Estate area yesterday.

As a worker was attacked and killed by an elephant due to lack of bus facilities, the villagers have demanded that the government repair the road to their village and operate buses for the safety of the people.
