Coimbatore: Consumer Protection Act Amendments 2019 have led to the upgradation of District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, which is also called as Consumer Court, to District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. As a result of this, the compensation ordering power also has been increased from Rs 20 lakhs to Rs 1 crore.

District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum at Coimbatore is located at the District Collectorate. This consumer court has one president, two members and 10 staff members. Before the onset of the COVID pandemic, an average of 30 to 40 new cases would be filed every month and orders would be pronounced on nearly 30 cases.
At present, the normal functioning of the court has been affected due to the ongoing pandemic, but still the president and the staff members are working hard to pronounce orders for the cases for which the arguments were over before the coronavirus outbreak.
Meanwhile, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has been upgraded to District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission from June 25.
Sources at the consumer court said, "Per the Consumer Protection Act Amendments 2019, The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum at Coimbatore has been upgraded to The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission from June 25, 2020. This has also resulted in the power that the court had in pronouncing orders. Previously, the president had the power to pronounce orders for compensation amounting to a maximum of Rs 20 lakhs. Henceforth, the president can pronounce orders to provide compensation upto Rs 1 crore. Hitherto, the affected consumer was allowed to file a case only at the place where he or she got affected (place of occurence), but now wherever the incident happens, the affected consumers can file cases at the courts in the districts where they live. These amendments will be very helpful to the affected consumers."
