Coimbatore: Smuggled gold worth ₹3.6 crore has been seized at Coimbatore Airport.

A press release from Deputy Director G. Sathish of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence reads, "Based on specific intelligence that smuggling of gold is being carried out from Middle East, officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Coimbatore, intercepted six passengers Basha, Nazar, Sajif, Sahul Hameed, Yuvaraj and Dharmaraj, who had arrived from Sharjah to Coimbatore Airport by Air Arabia flight on October 24."

The release added that, "The officers examined their belongings and found each of them were concealing gold in paste form in their clothes and undergarments. On questioning, they said that they were carrying this gold for a commission. The gold was seized and was extracted following due process. 6.88 kg of 24 carat gold worth ₹3.6 crore was extracted."

The release also said that gold smuggling is slowly picking up and is being carried out by various carriers and smugglers through the Vande Bharat flights too.
