Despite the Covid-19 impact, Coimbatore industrialists assure Diwali bonus to workers

Coimbatore: Although Covid-19 virus outbreak has made a big impact in all sectors, industrialists in Coimbatore district have assured Diwali bonus to the workers.

Diwali is a time awaited by all the workers since bonus distribution will be usually made by industrialists. A long while ago, the textile sector topped the list in bonus distribution. During the 1980s, government jobs were considered secondary to that in the textile sector. This was mainly due to the high salaries and various allowances provided in the sector. Due to lack of upgradation and various other issues, many spinning mills went out of business. Therefore, the engineering sector tops the list in paying attractive bonuses to the workers during Diwali. This year since the pandemic outbreak has made a big impact in all sectors, big doubts have risen in the minds of the workers about bonus, but industrialists in Coimbatore have assured to pay the same despite the crisis.

The Southern India Engineering Manufacturers Association (SIEMA) President K. V. Karthik said, "This year all the engineering industries are having a Very tough time. Supply chain has not come out from the crisis yet. Price hikes are witnessed. Demand has also gone down. Despite all these hardships, most of the industrialists would be paying the minimum bonus prescribed by the government."

'TACT' District President, J. James said, "Micro industrialists are reeling under the crisis, but still somehow we would be trying our best to distribute Diwali bonus to workers. The industries which fail to pay bonus will lose their workers."

'COTMA' President Siva Kumar said, "All the micro industrialists paid half month salary to their workers during the complete lockdown period. Distributing Diwali bonus is a big challenge. While 80% of the industries will pay the bonus, the remaining 20% would find to do so this year."

Coimbatore District Textile Workers Union (HMS) president, T.S. Rajamani said, "Each year, during Diwali, many industries would give some reasons to reduce the percentage of the bonus. This year, COVID lockdown was implemented only after last week of March and by that time the financial year was over. Hence industries should not cite virus outbreak as the reason for not distributing bonus or reduce the percentage this year."
