Coimbatore: The influx of onions to Coimbatore markets has increased and as a result, the onion price drops by Rs. 20 and currently stands at Rs. 70-80 per kg.

Large quantities of onions are usually brought to Coimbatore from Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Shallots come from neighbouring states. Onion yield has declined due to continuous rains in the last few days in neighboring states. Due to this, the supply of onions decreased.

As a result, the price of onions went up sharply and were sold for as high as Rs.90 and shallots Rs. 100. To control the prices, onions were imported from Egypt to Tamil Nadu. The first batch of 150 tonnes of onions arrived at the Chennai Koyambedu market two days ago. Prices have decreased as the supply from the neighbouring states have started to increase as well.

Rajendran, president of the TK Market Vegetable Traders' Association, said, "Currently, about 250 to 300 tonnes of onions per day arrive at Coimbatore from neighbouring states. Due to this, the price of onion has come down. Onions, which used to sell for Rs 90, sell for less than Rs 70 now. Egyptian onions have not yet reached the Coimbatore markets. The demand is not high even as the supply of onions is increasing."

The price of onions has come down but that of shallots still remains high. Public are a little relieved as onion prices have dropped.
