Coimbatore: Police arrested man who killed a daily wage labourer by throwing a stone on his head as refused money for alcohol.

The Kattoor police reached the spot at Nanjappa Road around midnight and sent the injured man to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for treatment, but he died tragically. Investigation revealed that the man who was killed was Balakrishnan and was from Sivagangai district.

It was also revealed that he was a daily wage labourer who had been staying by the roadside in Coimbatore for the past few months and was working. Meanwhile, police arrested Thangapandian from Madurai district in connection with the case.

During the police investigation it was revealed that Balakrishnan was sleeping on the roadside at the scene when Thangapandian arrived at midnight and asked for money from Balakrishnan to drink, but he refused. Following this both of them had a scuffle.

An enraged Thangapandian threw a stone at Balakrishnan's head. Balakrishnan was injured and fell unconscious on the spot. A frightened Thangapandian fled to his hometown, where he was arrested by the police. Police, who registered a case of murder in connection with the incident, produced him in court and lodged him at Coimbatore Central Jail.

Last year, labourers sleeping on the roadside in Coimbatore at areas including the Thandumariamman Temple, Coimbatore Government Hospital and Addis Street were killed in the same manner. This caused fear among the roadside dwellers as drug addicts had earlier been accused of murdering them for money.
