Coimbatore: Colorful Golu dolls mark Navaratri celebrations at Pollachi's Sulakkal Maiamman temple


Coimbatore: Navratri – the festival of worshipping the Goddess Durga is celebrated in different ways in different parts of India. In Tamil Nadu, people celebrate the nine days of festivity by placing 'Golu dolls' at their homes and temples. 

Celebrations at the 400-year-old Sulakkal Marriamman temple in Pollachi saw a large number of devotees on Saturday, the first day of Navaratri celebrations.The placement of dolls on a steps-like set-up comprising of a multitude of gods, goddesses, musical artists, animals, political leaders and children drew the attention of the devotees.



The devotees were provided with Prasadham. The priest in the temple opined that Golu and Navaratri represents Goddess Durga who set out to battle the demon Mahishasura for nine days, finally after the triumph of good over evil, the tenth day is celebrated as Vijayadasami.



Social distancing and other Covid SOPs were strictly adhered by the temple authorities.
