Construction work on the bus stand was affected due to the lockdown and now the work has been resumed.
There are 4 bus stands in Coimbatore - Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand, Central Bus Stand, Thiruvalluvar Bus Stand and Omni Bus Stand. Buses ply from the Central Bus Stand to districts including Tirupur, Erode and Namakkal. Buses for the southern districts of Thoothukudi, Madurai and Sivakasi are available from the Singanallur bus stand.
Integrated bus stand at Vellalore at a cost of Rs 172 crore
As Coimbatore is rapidly developing, the Corporation of Coimbatore decided to set up an integrated bus stand at a cost of Rs. 172 crores. For this, a site of 50 acres was selected at Vellalore and a project estimate was prepared to carry out the work.
Thereafter, project consultants finalized a project worth Rs.202.80 crore on 61.62 acres of land. However, due to lack of funds and changes in the project report, the construction of the Vellalore integrated bus stand has been delayed for the past few years and the work did not begin.
Construction began in January
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Palanisamy announced in January that a new integrated bus stand will be set up at a cost of Rs 178 crore in Vellalore. Following this, the work began last January at an area of 30 acres.
Ukkadam Lorrypettai to be relocated
The entrance to the bus stand has been planned to be set up on Chettipalayam Main Road. It is also planned to relocate the Lorrypettai that is operating in Ukkadam. As a result, it will ease traffic congestion in the Ukkadam area. Also, the entrance for lorries will be set up on the Cochin Bypass Road.
Features of the bus stand
The Vellalore Integrated bus stand can accommodate 140 buses at a time. In addition, a commercial complex, a restaurant and billboards will be set up at the bus stand. Proceeds will be used for bus stand maintenance. City buses, multi-axle buses and Omni buses will operate out of the bus stand.
Corporation Commissioner Kumaravel Pandian said, "The construction work of the integrated bus stand at Vellalore has been intensified. About 30 per cent of the work has been completed. It has been advised to complete the remaining work as soon as possible"
