Coimbatore: Pollachi farmers concerned as maize does not fetch expected price

Coimbatore: Pollachi farmers are worried because maize did not fetch the expected price.

This year, the expected yield on maize went down due to the untimely onset of the southwest monsoon worried the Pollachi farmers.

In Kinathukkadavu, Sokkanur and Singaiyanputhur areas near Pollachi, maize is the major crop cultivated by farmers.Maize is usually planted in the month of Chittirai every year. This year around, the maize yield was affected due to lack of rain at the time of sowing. On the other hand, heavy rains during the time of harvest in Purattasi caused the crop to rot.

Thus, instead of 2.5 tonnes of maize per acre, only 1.5 tonnes of maize was harvested. On top of this, traders who buy a quintal of maize for Rs. 1800 usually for poultry and cattle fodder pay only Rs. 1400 this year. The farmers are also concerned that the expense of Rs 6,000 per acre spent on harvesting is a mismatch to the low prices and would lead to losses.
