Coimbatore: The use and sale of products including plastic bags less than 50 microns is prohibited in areas under Pollachi Municipality.

Over the past few months, there have been complaints that the use of plastics below 50 microns in stores in the city has started to increase.

Following this, health inspectors inspected the shops of Dharmaraj, Selvam, and Senthilkumar and also other shops in Bazaar Street, Imam Khan Street and SS Kovil Street. At the time, it was found that more than 15 stores had plastic products that were less than 50 microns.

About 115 kg of plastic items were confiscated and a total fine of Rs 4,500 was imposed.

Officials said the confiscated plastics were dumped at the municipal garbage dump and destroyed. Municipal officials have warned that the use of banned plastic products in Pollachi will result in confiscation and severe fines.
