Coimbatore: Coimbatore: Mill workers in Coimbatore staged a dharna protest demanding the reopening of centrally owned cotton mills.

There are seven NTC cotton mills owned by the Central Government operating in districts including Coimbatore, Sivagangai and Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu. More than 6,000 workers are employed in these factories.

All these plants were closed due to the spread of coronavirus infections. After that the factories that were opened on the basis of some relaxations are not fully operational and are only operating part time. In addition, those in charge of the plant management were paid their full salaries and the workers were paid half their salaries. A series of protests took place in various places to condemn this.

The workers were paid full wages laters.

However, workers staged a sit-in protest in front of the Pankaja Mills in Ramanathapuram, insisting that most of the workers here were unemployed as the factories operate only part time and that they should be fully opened immediately and that everyone should be paid in full.

Similarly, workers at CSW Mill, Murugan Mill and Cambodia Mill in Coimbatore went on strike.

Leaders of trade unions, including the HMS, LPF and AITUC, took part in the protests.
