Coimbatore: Rs. 7.87 lakh collected so far in fines from people flouting COVID-19 government regulations in Pollachi

Coimbatore: With the number of COVID infections in Pollachi municipality increasing day in and day out, continuous inspections are conducted by Health officials to check whether COVID-19 regulations issued by the TN government are followed properly.

It has been ordered by the Municipality and Health Department that shops should be kept open only from 6 am to 8 pm and shopkeepers should ensure that customers should wear face masks and follow social distancing and violation this would lead to fines and closure of shops.

This being the case, the municipality received a series of complaints that some shops near the Pollachi Municipality office do not observe social distancing. On those lines, municipal health inspectors were engaged in monitoring work on the orders of the Municipal Commissioner Gandhirajan.

At that time, it was found that in a sweet shop, an internet center anda tea shop, people stood in crowds without observing the social distancing and wearing face masks. Subsequently, those in the shops were advised to wear masks. The officials then issued warning notices to shops that did not comply with the regulations.

According to the officials, "The municipality is taking various measures to control the spread of corona in Pollachi. The first time, a warning notice will be issued and the next time Rs. 200 will be levied on those who do not wear a mask. Rs.500 will be levied on shops that do not ensure social distancing and hand sanitisation. A second-time violation of the rules will result in a fine of Rs 5,000 and the shop will be sealed."

"Also, Rs 7,87,400 has been collected in fines by the Municipality, Police and Revenue departments since last March," they added.
