Tirupur: Tirupur CPIM conducted sit-in protest today demanding closure of a pit in rock at Velliangadu area that causes frequent accidents.

The protestors pointed out the frequent accidents at the 50th Ward, Velliyankadu and KM Nagar areas in a pit in the rock (paraikuzhi) that has not been closed for more than three years despite repeated petitions to the corporation administration.

They said there is a risk of contamination because of stagnation of sewage in the pit during the rainy season.

The protestors had heated arguments with corporation officials and police who had come to negotiate with them. This caused a stir for some time.

They dispersed after police spoke with the corporation administration and promised immediate action to close the rock pit.
