Legendary Sherpa who climbed Mt. Everest 10 times without oxygen support dies at 72

Ang Rita Sherpa, a legendary Nepali mountaineer who climbed Mount Everest ten times without the use of supplemental oxygen between 1983 and 1996, passed away at 72, due to prolonged brain and liver illness at his home in Nepali capital of Kathmandu, on Tuesday.

Often refered as 'Snow leopard' for his exemplary climbing skills, all of Ang Rita's ascents to the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit of the world's tallest mountain were between 1983 and 1996 without bottled oxygen support.

The climbing star's mortal remains was placed at a Sherpa Gomba, a holy site, in Kathmandu, and cremated today. While many other climbers have since surpassed Ang Rita's feat, with one member of the community even setting a record of 24 ascents.
