The Nilgiris: Kurinji flowers that bloom once in 12 years are in full bloom in the Nilgiris this year. Kurinji flowers that have blossomed in the crevices of rocks in the Naduvattam T.R.Bazar area on the Coonoor-Ooty road have been captivating the passers-by.

Though it is alleged that these flowers blossom once in 12 years, research states that the actual interval between each flowering has not been proved. With the botanical name of Strobilanthes Foliosa, the flower petals are purple in colour and the insides white. It is commonly known as the Blue Kurinji (Neela Kurinji). Since they are spotted in the rock crevices, they are also called 'Kal Kurinji' (Stone Kurinji).

Since ancient times, the Kurinji flower has been used to represent the land mass where it is found.

The last blooming of the Kurinji flowers was witnessed by the locals 12 years ago. Kurinji flowers have been spotted in full bloom in various other areas of Nilgiris as well.
