K. Thangavelu was the senior leader of the Marxist Communist Party and served as the secretary of the Coimbatore district for 11 years. Right after the tenure of K. Ramani, Thangavelu was elected to the State Executive Committee from the West Zone and served for more than 20 years by leading in various districts. He also was the MLA of Tirupur South.

MP PR Natarajan in his Facebook condoled the death. He wrote, "The demise of a great leader of the working class in the West Zone is a great loss to us. I pay my deepest condolences to his family."
