National Education Policy 2020 was approved by the Union Cabinet to make reforms in both school and higher education sectors.

NEP-2020 aims to universalize education from pre-school to secondary level with 100% GER by 2030 and bring 2 crore children who dropped out of school back into the mainstream through an open schooling system.

Mea while Prime Minister Modiwho addressed the Governor's meet held on Monday, September 7, reiterated that NEP 2020 has been framed after many years of labour by a panel led by Dr K Kasturirangan and feedback of more than 2 lakh people, including stakeholders. He ensured that the new policy focuses on foundational learning and languages, learning outcomes, and teachers' training.

Tamil Nadu government told the Centre that it is not in favour of an entrance exam by the National Testing Agency and institutional restructuring proposes in the NEP, but it has neither opposed nor hailed the NEP completely up until now even though various political parties including DMK, PMK and celebrities in the State have expressed their opposition to the NEP.

Under the circumstances, the TN government has announced that it has formed a 13-members committee to study the pros and cons of NEP implementation in schools. It is to be noted that a similar committee has already been formed to study NEP feasibility for higher education in TN. The State Commissioner for School Education Sigy Thomas Vaidhyan will be heading the committee.
