The Nilgiris: In what came as a shock to wildlife enthusiasts, an aged male elephant has allegedly died due to senility and lack of food in the Gudalur Forest Range.

The Nilgiris: In what came as a shock to wildlife enthusiasts, an aged male elephant has allegedly died due to senility and lack of food in the Gudalur Forest Range.

The forest department workers who were patrolling the Vachakolli Beet area near Puliyamparai next to Gudalur witnessed an old elephant lying dead and a herd of elephants surrounding it. Information regarding this was passed on to Forest Ranger Ramakrishnan. Following this, veterinarians Sukumar and Paranjothi rushed to the spot.

The dead elephant was approximately 40 years old and post mortem on the elephant was conducted by the doctors in the presence of the Forest Divisional Officer.

The initial report stated that the elephant had died due to senility and improper intake of food. Actual reason of death of the elephant can be ascertained only after the autopsy, said sources. It is said that a herd of nine elephants have been wandering in the area for the past three days and one among those has passed away.
