Old man attacked by cricket bat in Neelambur succumbs to injuries; police change assault into murder case

Coimbatore: An old man who was attacked with a cricket bat by an unidentified assailant near Sulur succumbed to his injuries causing shock in the area.

Kaliappan (60), S/o Ganapathi Gounder of the Neelambur area, Sulur is a retiree from a popular foundry in Coimbatore.He owns a house in the Neelambur area and has let out more than five houses for rent. He resided on the first floor of the house. An irascible man, he was also known to use a lot of abusive words.

He had the practise of undertaking daily walks in the morning. At 6 AM yesterday he went for a walk from Neelambur to Chinniyampalayam. When he was returning from his walk and was near the star hotel in the Neelambur area, an assailant who had hidden himself behind a parked lorry attacked Kaliappan with a cricket bat that he had come prepared with. He attacked Kaliappan many times on the head and escaped from the site.

People in the vicinity rescued Kaliappan and admitted him at a private hospital in Neelambur for treatment. Following this, the Sulur police were informed of the attack. They filed an attempt to murder case and were investigating .

Meanwhile, Kaliappan's health deteriorated drastically and he was sent to the Coimbatore Government hospital for higher treatment. He succumbed to his injuries around 7 PM yesterday. Following this the Sulur police changed the attempt to murder case into murder case. They are on the lookout for the person who carried out the attack.

The murder of a person who went out for his morning walk has caused shock among the residents of the area. Sulur police are analyzing the CCTV footage in the vicinity.
