Coimbatore: Onam celebrations at Siddhapudur Ayyappan temple was carried out with "Atha Pookalam" with very few people participating and worshipping due to COVID-19.



Onam is celebrated every year by the Malayalam speaking people. The festival begins on the Hastam star in the month of Avani and ends on the tenth day today on Thiruvonam. Onam is celebrated by placing flowers on their doorsteps. People wear new clothes and cook a variety of delicious food to welcome the Mahabali king who is believed to visit today.

Onam is celebrated all over Kerala after the end of the monsoon season when the surroundings are lush and green. Keralites believe that happiness will flourish in their families.

Over 50,000 Malayalees live in Coimbatore which is situated along the Kerala border. District Collector Rajamani had declared a local holiday for the Onam festival this year as well. People were advised to celebrate Onam festival safely by wearing masks and following social distancing.



Special poojas were held at the Sidhapudur Ayyappan Temple.



Very few people attended and worshiped the Lord by wearing masks following social distancing. Malayalees in all parts of Coimbatore celebrated Onam by making 'Pookalam' in front of their homes.
